Alef Education is a leading provider of online learning solutions in the K-12 sector, serving over 120,000 students around the world. Their AI-powered Alef Platform is a hub for student resources and assignments as well as real-time visibility tools for educators. The platform is built around microservices, centering on Apache Kafka and related technologies.

In 2017, Alef Education decided to scale up their operations, and was immediately faced with a conundrum: how to upgrade a platform whose architecture was fundamentally difficult to scale without service disruptions and then to be able to provide the same high-quality user experience post-upscale?

Alef Education realized their best solution would be to move to a managed Kafka provider who would handle the infrastructure side of the platform in its entirety. Today they use Aiven for all their data processing with a service chain composed of Kafka, InfluxDB and Grafana.
