The major version 3 of OpenSearch is a foundational upgrade, built on a new, high-performance core, marking a significant step forward in performance and usability. This means that as an Aiven customer, you get immediate access to a faster, more efficient search experience, all fully managed.
These features are available right now for you to use in your Aiven for OpenSearch version 3 services.

  • Massive Performance Boost with Apache Lucene 10: The heart of the OpenSearch 3.0 upgrade is the move to Lucene 10. This new engine provides a significant performance leap across the board. Benchmarks show up to 60% lower search latency compared to versions 2.x of Aiven for OpenSearch, meaning your queries are faster and more responsive. Improvements can get up to 80% compared to versions 1.x!
  • Smarter Storage & Efficiency: Your service now works more intelligently with your data. New features like sparse indexing speed up queries by allowing the engine to intelligently skip irrelevant data blocks. For customers using vector search, derived source dramatically cuts storage needs by reducing redundant data storage, leading to better efficiency and lower costs - our testing on sample data showed derived source queries running up to 70% faster on version 3 compared to version 2 on the same sample data.

Below, an illustration of the improved speed of search queries on version 3.3 vs. 2.19 that you can reproduce easily using the opensearch_dashboards_sample_data_logs data shipping with your OpenSearch Dashboard instance by default.

Loading code...

This simple _search query took 126 milliseconds on 2.19, and only 89 milliseconds on 3.3 (41.5% faster).

Loading code...

This derived source queries is 75% faster, from 564 milliseconds on version 2.19 vs. 142 ms on 3.3.
